I have an 02 Audi a4 1.8 turbo that needs the automatic transmission replaced. Repairs at the dealer cost way too much for me right now, a couple of thousand, I was wondering if I get a replacement used auto trans how hard would it be to do this at home? would I need any special tools? In a BMW there is a Transmission Program Error which makes the car shift into 3rd gear. When the car is stopped and restarted this ends. Happens most times a few minutes into driving the car. Both of these cars are solid european cars. So both are not cheap. I was just wondering which would be more costlier to repair. Volvo, seems they have the edge on durability so parts on that might be more expensive or no?? I am not talking about the racing sports BMW. I am a service tech, very conversant with car repairs, but would need some skilled training on how to repair and rebuild auto transmission system on VW and Audi cars, incl the ZF, multitronics etc.Is there any available skill centre for such training?
