Engine noise intrudes into the normally quiet cabin on the freeway suggesting a slightly short 5th gear. Some of the longer hills on our road test route highlighted the car’s lack of torque, not that it struggled, there just wasn’t much left in reserve. Away from the freeway and onto some back roads any shortcomings in the engine department are compensated for by the supple suspension. Across patchy and undulating tarmac the ride quality and handling are very good, the car tracking straight, maintaining its line through rough corners. While the steering isn’t sports car direct it has good feel and weight, the nose turning into corners decisively. Mild understeer is the main handling characteristic, the tyres offering good levels of grip, while the brakes are strong and fade free, although the pedal doesn’t offer much feel.
